Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a technique used to remove anomalous tissues (sores) from the digestive tract, including precancerous growths and early-stage cancers. Endoscopic mucosal excision is carried out using a long, constrained tube that is equipped with a light, a camera, and various tools. The endoscope is inserted down your throat during an upper gastrointestinal EMR to locate an irregularity in your throat, stomach, or upper portion of the small digestive tract (duodenum). The cylinder is directed up through the back to eliminate damage to the colon. EMR, which is essentially a treatment methodology, is also used to collect samples for analysis. EMR can be used to determine whether the disease has affected tissues below the gastrointestinal tract lining, assuming malignant development is present.
