Prior to becoming a gastroenterologist, one must complete a three-year residency in internal medicine. After that, he or she is qualified for two to three years of extra, specialised gastroenterology training (fellowship). After medical school, this entails a total of 5–6 years of extra specialised education. The fellowship is a demanding, hands-on programme that pushes the trainee to gain a thorough understanding of gastrointestinal illnesses while receiving instruction from globally renowned experts. To ensure healthy digestion, nutrient absorption, waste elimination, and metabolic processes, a gastroenterologist must have a thorough understanding of the normal physiology of all the previously listed organs as well as motility through the intestines and gastrointestinal tract.
