endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a minimally invasive surgery which uses a flexible, tube-like instrument known as an endoscope. It is used to remove precancerous and cancerous regions from the GI tract. The term "submucosal" refers to the procedure's focus on tumours that are under the GI tract's lining (mucosa). Because of their proximity to muscular tissue, these tumours can be challenging to entirely eradicate with standard techniques. This operation is carried out by gastroenterologists, who have received specialised training in treating the GI system. The endoscope will be inserted by the doctor through the mouth for upper GI tumours and through the anus for lower GI tumours, depending on where the tumour is located in the GI tract. Most people recover from ESD treatment as an outpatient surgery and return home the following day. The layer between the lining of internal organs and the muscle wall, known as the submucosa, is where the ESD method can be utilised to treat the following cancers and lesions such as colon polyps or malignant tumours in the early stages, such as colorectal, stomach, or oesophageal cancer.
