Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for visualizing and treating bile and pancreatic duct diseases. The endoscope is carefully inserted through the mouth and pushed down into the stomach and the first portion of the small intestine (the duodenum). It is then used to locate the bile duct opening (papilla) that empties into the duodenum. To reach the bile and pancreatic ducts, a small plastic tube is passed down the endoscope through the papilla. A small amount of dye is then injected into the ducts to allow for the capture of x-ray images. Bile ducts transport bile from the liver to the gallbladder and duodenum. These bile ducts connect to form a single bile duct. The pancreatic ducts are the tubes that carry pancreatic juice from the pancreas to the duodenum. The main pancreatic duct is fed by small pancreatic ducts.
