Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a group of disorders in which the intestines become inflamed (red and swollen), most likely as a result of the body's immune response against its intestinal tissue. Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease are the two most common types of IBD (CD). Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon (large intestine). Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus; however, the small intestine and/or the colon are the most commonly affected. Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have a waxing and waning course in terms of severity and intensity of the illness. When there is severe inflammation, the disease is said to be active, and the person has a flare-up of the condition. When the level of inflammation is low (or non-existent), the person usually has no symptoms, and the disease is said to be in remission.
