A patient can have cancer from their gastrointestinal system removed via endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) without having to have an organ removed. As a result, the patient's quality of life can be preserved. The gastrointestinal tract, which is the route by which food travels from the mouth to the anus, is made up of the oesophagus, also referred to as the food tube, the stomach, the small bowel, and the colon. Dysplastic growths (abnormal growths) in the esophageal or gastric cells cause malignant (cancerous) tumours to form in esophageal and gastric cancer. Treatment options include ESD, surgery, brachytherapy radiation, chemotherapy, and combination therapy (radiation and chemotherapy).
